Introduction – Defining the Problem
Abstract
This chapter is a short introduction to the book. The author explains the rationale and structure of the book and looks back at the emergence of a theoretical literature purporting to explain the activity of planning. He outlines the dilemmas faced by planning researchers and practitioners in places where theories are imported from foreign countries. He introduces the task of researchers keen to build the foundations of indigenous theory. The concepts of space and spatial planning are approached in a cursory fashion, before an analytical presentation of the book chapters.
